Video Proof that Mercury Vapor is Released from Amalgam Fillings

For those of you who want visual proof that mercury vapor is released from amalgam fillings I encourage you to view my YouTube VideoMercury: The Poison in Your Teeth. This amazing video clearly demonstrates that not only is mercury vapor released from amalgams but also quantitatively demonstrates the actual amount of mercury released from an amalgam by a common means of stimulation, tooth brushing.

As you’ll see in the Video, brushing a medium sized amalgam filling will release more mercury vapor than allowed by governmental regulatory agencies at the workplace! The Video also compares the amount of mercury vapor released to other forms of stimulation, by the patient and at the dental office – and what you can do about it!

There are many scientific studies that prove this, but it’s one thing to read about it and yet another to actually see how much mercury vapor being released from an amalgam filling by an EPA approved mercury vapor analyzer. The short video also offers evidence of the toxicity of mercury and is well worth the few minutes of your time it takes to view my YouTube Video: Mercury: The Poison in Your Teeth. Don’t forget to tell your friends and family about this video – or a dentist you’d like to help educate about this subject. You can also access the video by searching YouTube for either Tom McGuire, DDS or The Poison in Your Teeth.

Mercury-Free Dentistry: Associations and Organizations

There are a number of biological and holistic dental organizations whose goals are to bridge the gap between oral and overall health, promote mercury free dentistry and improve the quality and service of dental treatment. Dr. McGuire is including the ones he’s most familiar with here so you will understand why he is comfortable recommending any mercury free dentist who belongs to these Associations/Organizations and also are members of his organizations. They are:

International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT)

The IAOMT is a membership organization for dental, medical and research professionals who seek to promote mercury-free (amalgam-free) and mercury-safe dentistry, and raise the standards of scientific biocompatibility in the dental practice. The IAOMT is an organization whose members have set very high ethics code and rely on science to support their position.

The IAOMT is not only active in protecting the dental patient from exposure to mercury vapor released from amalgam fillings, and other toxic substances used in the dental practice, but in requiring the FDA to ban these toxic fillings. It also seeks to have the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulate and monitor the dental office for mercury, protecting the patient, dentist, staff, and the environment, from unnecessary and excessive exposure to mercury at the dental office. I highly recommend that dentists who are considering becoming amalgam-free and mercury-safe contact this organization. For more information please visit their website at www.iaomt.org.

International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine (IABDM)

The International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine, or IABDM, is committed to the education of holistic dentists, physicians and health practitioners in the art and science of biological dentistry. Biological practice is socially, spiritually, ecologically and environmentally aware. Its practitioners honor the right to informed consent. They know the human body is more than a collection of parts that can be mechanically worked on in isolation. Seeing us as whole, unified beings, they respect each person’s individual uniqueness and dignity. IABDM members are committed to providing the patient with the knowledge, tools and power to take charge of his or her health.

Members of the IABDM are also mercury free and mercury safe and Dr. McGuire has a great deal of respect for the Academy, its approach to biological and mercury free dentistry, and its philosophy. He highly recommends a IABDM member, particularly one who is also a member of the IAMSD. If you are a dentist and are looking for an organization that will help you learn more about the benefits of biological dentistry, for your practice and patients, and Dr. McGuire highly recommends becoming a member and suggests you visit their website, www.iabdm.org.

The Institute of Nutritional Dentistry (IND)

The Institute of Nutritional Dentistry is a teaching organization that is unique in many ways. It offers seminars for dentists that are specifically designed to teach them how to practice Whole Body and Healthy Dentistry.  The seminars provides dentists with access to the latest information on all aspects of nutritional dentistry, innovative technology, products, and biocompatible dental materials, to name a few. Dr. McGuire personally knows several of the Institute’s founders and member dentists, and has a great deal of respect for the Institute and its goals.

If you find a dentist who belongs to this organization and the IAMFD you can feel confident that he or she will be mercury free and you will be in good hands. For more information please go to its website at: www.naturaldentistry.org

The Institute of Systemic Dentistry (ISD)

The Institute of Systemic Dentistry is the East Coast version of the Institute of Nutritional Dentistry and is also a teaching organization that is unique in many ways. It offers similar seminars for dentists that are specifically designed to teach them how to practice Whole Body and Healthy Dentistry. The seminars provides dentists with access to the latest information on all aspects of nutritional dentistry, innovative technology, products, and biocompatible dental materials, to name a few. Dr. McGuire personally knows a number  of the Institute’s founders and member dentists, and he has a great deal of respect for the Institute and its goals.

If you find an ISD dentist who also belongs to the IAMFD you can feel confident that he or she will be mercury free and you will be in good hands. For more information please go to its website at: www.naturaldentistry.org

Holistic Dental Association (HDA)

The Holistic Dental Association (HDA) was formed by a group of dentists who wished to establish an organization that would provide a forum for the development and sharing of health promoting therapies. Today, more and more individuals are assuming greater responsibility for their own health. In this regard, the HDA has assumed a primary obligation to provide information and guidance to those persons seeking to participate in their own health care and to help in the continuing education of dental and health practitioners who have a desire to expand their knowledge and awareness.

This organization is concerned with the oral and overall health of their patients and Dr. McGuire has a very high regard for it and its members. He believes that if you find a dentist who is a member of the HAD and also of the IAMFD you will be assured of a dental practitioner who is mercury free, mercury safe, knowledgeable, and of high integrity. For more information about this organization please go to, www.holisticdental.org.

Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI)

This is another organization Dr. McGuire respects. This Institute is one of the world’s premier post-graduate dental teaching centers and was established to educate, guide and support dentists in the delivery of the most advanced patient-based care possible and many of the dentists who graduate from the Institute have mercury free practices. Because the LVI stresses advanced education in cosmetic dentistry LVI dentists, who are also mercury free, are experts at replacing mercury amalgam fillings with the latest in composite, and other appropriate dental fillings, inlays, and crowns. Replacing amalgam fillings with composites is very technique sensitive and LVI graduates are highly skilled at this procedure. Because of this Dr. McGuire highly recommends a IAMSD member dentist who is also an LVI graduate. An LVI member dentist will include this information with in theKey Information section of the database listing; so be sure to look for it.

Mercury Free Dentist Internet Listing Service: How to Apply for Membership

If you are a mercury free dentist, you can apply for membership by calling 800-335-7755 or register on-line by Clicking Here. The minimum requirement for a free listing is that you do not place mercury amalgam fillings and provide patients with a safe environment for amalgam removal

Cover-up Showing Scientific Data link Between Vaccines Containing Mercury and Autism

CDC Manipulated and Covered up Scientific Data Showing link Between Vaccines Containing Mercury and Autism

Deniers of the link between mercury-laden vaccines and autism are going to have a hard time denying the latest findings by the Coalition for Mercury-Free Drugs (CoMeD). The nonprofit group has obtained critical documents via a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request that exposes the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) role in deliberately lying about and manipulating a key Danish study that showed a clear link between vaccines containing mercury and autism.

In 2003, the journalPediatricspublished a study conducted in Denmark that observed a significant decline in autism rates following the country’s elimination of Thimerosal, a mercury-based component, from vaccines. But thanks to the CDC’s corrupting influence, the published version of the study inPediatricsactually claimed the opposite, and alleged that removal of Thimerosal brought about an increase in autism rates.

According to the documents, CDC officials removed large amounts of data from the study that showed a decline in autism rates following the removal of Thimerosal. The agency then twisted the remaining data to imply an increase in autism rates following the removal of Thimerosal, and suggested that there was no link between Thimerosal and autism.

Upon submission of the CDC’s tainted version of the study toPediatrics, the study’s authors contacted CDC officials to let them know that the agency had incorrectly interpreted the data. They tried to tell the CDC that its figures and conclusions were wrong, and that corrections needed to be made.

The CDC allegedly responded by saying that it would take a look at the incorrect data, but proceeded to submit the corrupted version of the study toPediatricsanyway. After encouraging the editors ofPediatricsto perform an expedited review of the corrupted study, the CDC ended up convincing the journal to publish the fraudulent study, which it did in 2003.

Now that this critical information has been officially released for the world to see, CoMeD is pressing the CDC to conduct a full criminal investigation into the matter, and make a formal declaration about whether or not scientific fraud was involved. CoMeD is also calling for a full, immediate retraction of the corrupted study fromPediatrics.

“This should not be tolerated by those who are entrusted with our children’s health and well-being,” says Lisa Sykes, President of CoMeD.

Environmental Threat of Dental Mercury

Posted on 08 September 2011 by admin

By Consumers for Dental Choice

Dental amalgams have been in use since the American Civil War. They are an anachronism that have been perpetuated by dental industry patents, and there’s a conspiracy of silence that seeks to keep the 75 percent of Americans who are ignorant about the fact that amalgam fillings are actually 50 percent mercury.

Fortunately, in the last 10 years nearly half of dentists have recognized this and have stopped using them in their practice. However, 50 percent of all US dentists still use them, and that currently accounts for between 240-300 tons of mercury entering the market every year. In the United States, dental offices are the second largest user of mercury – and this mercury eventually ends up in our environment by one pathway or another.

Dental Mercury—A Major Source of Environmental Pollution

Mercury from dental amalgam pollutes:

  • Water via not only dental clinic releases and human waste (amalgam is by far the largest source of mercury in our wastewater)
  • Air via cremation, dental clinic emissions, sludge incineration, and respiration; and
  • Soil via landfills, burials, and fertilizer

Once in the environment, dental mercury converts to its even more toxic form, methylmercury, and becomes a major source of mercury in the fish you eat. The cost of cleaning up this environmental hazard is high. According to studies, amalgam is “more expensive than most, possibly all, other fillings when including environmental costs.”

But the cost of not cleaning up dental mercury from our environment is even higher. The environmental health effects of amalgam are well known, and have recently been reiterated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency: brain damage and neurological problems, especially for children and the unborn babies of pregnant women.

With dental mercury uncontrollably entering the environment from multiple pathways, phasing out amalgam and transitioning to non-mercury alternatives is the only way to reduce – and eventually eliminate – this significant source of mercury that threatens our environment and ultimately our health.

Consumers for Dental Choice Takes on Dental Mercury Pollution

In 2009, the US nations, under the auspices of the United Nations Environmental Programme, announced negotiations for a treaty to address all man-made sources of mercury pollution including amalgam. And Consumers for Dental Choice – the leading organization devoted to stopping the use of dental mercury – was ready to take action.

With the first of five treaty negotiation sessions fast approaching in February 2010, Consumers for Dental Choice’s executive director, Charlie Brown, knew it was time to organize the mercury-free dentistry advocates from around the globe into a strong voice for patients, dental workers, and the environment. With just 100 days until the negotiations were set to start in Stockholm, Charlie Brown started contacting mercury-free dentistry activists from around the world, proposing that they all work together to make sure that the nations addressed amalgam at the mercury treaty negotiations.

The response was enthusiastic, and intense, as the international work began immediately.

In no time at all, Consumers for Dental Choice and its new allies decided to form the World Alliance for Mercury-Free Dentistry, a coalition dedicated to stopping dental mercury pollution. Charlie Brown was elected president.

The opposition was formidable. The pro-mercury World Dental Federation (FDI) – backed by funding from amalgam manufacturers and distributors and even candy-makers – had already gone so far as to move its entire headquarters to Geneva, home of both the World Health Organization and pertinent United Nations Environmental Programme offices, in order to lobby full-time for an exemption for amalgam in the mercury treaty. Clearly, Consumers for Dental Choice (CfDC) and its new-found allies had their work at the treaty negotiations cut out for them.

CfDC Puts Amalgam on the Table at Mercury Treaty Negotiations

At the first of five negotiating sessions for the mercury treaty, held in Stockholm in June 2010, Consumers for Dental Choice and its multinational team were there in force – running an information booth, distributing scientific literature, giving presentations, networking with like-minded organizations, educating delegates, and convincing the world that it must find a solution to the dental mercury problem.

“I can’t say enough about our team,” says Charlie Brown.

“We joined forces with the outstanding leaders of our movement in other major countries, such as Servando Pérez-Dominguez of Spain, Marie Grosman of France, and Angela Kilmartin of Great Britain; with Elisabet Carlsson, the advocate whose work led to a ban on amalgam in Sweden; with dentists such as Dr. Graeme Munro-Hall of Great Britain, Dr. Raimondo Pische of Italy, and Dr. Christer Malmström of Sweden who came armed with the science supporting our position; and with the multi-lingual talents of Anita Vazquez Tibau of California and Kathy Huddlestone of France.”

The World Dental Federation – which is like the pro-mercury American Dental Association on steroids – was caught unaware. The amalgam issue had moved from the back-burner to the front and center: dental mercury had emerged as a major issue for the nations to address in the treaty.

In October 2010 came the first fruits of the collective labor of Consumers for Dental Choice and its allies from around the world. The staff of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) presented its first draft for a treaty – and listed amalgam as one of the top five mercury products to be phased out. As UNEP explained,

“The product types listed in this draft annex collectively account for about 80 per cent of the mercury consumption for all mercury-added products. Thus, they would be the most important products to address under the mercury instrument.”

Consumers for Dental Choice was determined to keep amalgam on that list. And so it did. At the second negotiations session held in Chiba, Japan in January, Consumers for Dental Choice’s Charlie Brown again assembled an outstanding – and diverse – team consisting of leaders from five continents plus three mercury-free dentists: Dominique Bally of Cote d’Ivoire, Dr. Lillian Lasaten-Ebuen of the Philippines, Dr. Naji Kodeih of Lebanon, Dr. Graeme Munro-Hall of Great Britain, Juliet Pratt of New Zealand, Dr. Dave Simone of the United States, and Anita Vazquez Tibau of the United States.

Together, they asked the nations to support five common-sense steps to phase-down – and ultimately phase-out – amalgam use:

  1. Educate patients and parents about amalgam’s mercury content, the neurological risks, and the environmental consequences;
  2. Reform insurance policies and government-funded medical programs in order to give priority to mercury-free alternatives;
  3. Protect children and fetuses, two subpopulations almost universally recognized as more susceptible to the neurotoxic effects of mercury vapor, from amalgam exposure;
  4. Educate dentists about dental mercury pollution and the benefits of alternatives; and
  5. Promote the use of atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) – a low-cost, mercury-free technique that is particularly well-suited for rural areas of developing countries.

Instead of responding to Consumers for Dental Choice’s proposed strategies, the World Dental Federation (FDI) stonewalled – they blamed parents for children’s cavities and all but lobbied for funding for their Global Caries Initiative to prevent cavities (a program that FDI representatives privately acknowledged would in fact increase access to mercury fillings and result in more mercury entering the environment!).

Charlie Brown pointed out that if FDI wanted to reduce cavities, it could stop accepting money from one of its leading corporate partners: the Mars/Wrigley candy colossus (who surely would not be paying FDI money if it believed FDI was serious about impeding children’s access to sugar).

In Chiba no specific decisions were made about any product, so amalgam and all other decisions were tabled until the third negotiating session to be held in Nairobi in late October 2011. In latest draft of the treaty following this second negotiating session, amalgam remains on the list of mercury products to be phased out (although what form this list will take is still being debated). Terms that would require amalgam separators and encapsulated amalgam (as opposed to bulk bottled amalgam) also made it into this second draft.

But everything is still in up in the air until the third negotiating session in Nairobi, where the nations’ delegates will hammer out treaty terms, starting from this latest draft of the treaty.

The U.S. Government Supports the “Phase Out” of Amalgam

As an organization based in the United States, Consumers for Dental Choice worked to educate its own government about dental mercury pollution and the many mercury-free alternatives to amalgam. Last March, Consumers for Dental Choice’s diligence paid off: the U.S. government, in its official submission to UNEP, called for both the “eventual phase out” of amalgam and prompt “phase down” steps, including many of our recommendations, such as:

  • “Educating patients and parents”
  • “Protecting children and fetuses,” and
  • “Training of dental professionals on the environmental impacts of mercury in dental amalgams”Mercury Free Dentistry Week

From a government whose device regulator (FDA) had previously refused to educate the public about amalgam’s mercury content or take any steps to protect vulnerable populations, it was a welcome – even spectacular – development for the cause of mercury-free dentistry! Now other governments from around the world are joining the push for mercury-free dentistry: The Arab League, the African region, the Council of Europe, and numerous developing nations are now calling for the phase-out of amalgam.

Join the Campaign for Mercury-Free Dentistry!

But the battle’s not won yet – there are still three treaty negotiating sessions to go and the World Dental Federation is determined to protect amalgam to the bitter end. Consumers for Dental Choice went from working only in the United States to now leading the battle for mercury-free dentistry both worldwide and on the home front. Its financial needs are much greater than ever. So we ask for your help!

With Consumers for Dental Choice

Dental amalgams have been in use since the American Civil War. They are an anachronism that has been perpetuated by dental industry patents, and there’s a conspiracy of silence that seeks to keep the 75 percent of Americans who are ignorant about that fact that amalgam fillings are actually 50 percent mercury.

As stated by Charlie Brown, who founded the Consumers for Dental Choice in 1996:

“The only way amalgam could be marketed was to hide the mercury. The only way you could hide the mercury is to have a coordinated effort to make sure that nobody blew the whistle.

At the start of our movement, we confronted an iron triangle; three major forces: The American Dental Association that profit from a system of consumer ignorance; The Food and Drug Administration that sits in the hip pocket of the American Dental Association… and the state dental boards, who were the enforcers who told dentists, “You have to be silent.”

The American Dental Association had a gag rule and said, “Don’t say the M word. Don’t tell people about the mercury; don’t say that it’s toxin, or there will be consequences.” The consequences were the state dental boards pulling licenses of dentists all through the 1990s and threatening to pull the licenses of many more.

Fortunately in the last 10 years nearly half of all US dentists have recognized the dangers of amalgams and have stopped using them in their practice. But the remaining 50 percent of dentists still use them, and that currently accounts for between 240-300 tons of mercury entering the market every year. In the United States, dental offices are the second largest user of mercury – and this mercury eventually ends up in our environment by one pathway or another.

Did You Know?…

Dental amalgam can cause far-reaching problems, such as:

  • Exposure to mercury, the most toxic and more vaporous of the heavy metals, can harm your kidneys, and permanently damage your child’s developing neurological system, and even kill your unborn child in the womb.
  • To implant amalgam, a dentist drills out healthy tooth matter in order to carve the crater necessary for amalgam placement – a primitive process that irreversibly weakens tooth structure. With a damaged tooth structure and with a metal-based filling that expands and contracts with temperature changes, teeth with amalgam are much more likely to crack years later, necessitating additional dental work.
  • Amalgam is a workplace hazard, especially for young female dental workers who experience an elevated rate of reproductive failures.
  • Dental mercury is the number one source of mercury in our wastewater, so dentists are handing the clean-up bill for their pollution to taxpayers and water ratepayers.

Why would a primitive, pre-Civil War polluting product that is 50 percent mercury and cracks teeth still be going into your mouth?

Amalgam was introduced in the Civil War era by the new American Dental Association, which won a political battle with the physicians of the mouth, who said using mercury in oral health care is malpractice. Florida dentist James Hardy, in his bookMercury Free, refers to the creation of amalgam and the creation of the American Dental Association as the “twin-birth.”

Why Do Half of All Dentists Still Use Mercury Amalgam?

We now know the risks, so why do half of dentists continue to use the filling material used by their great-grandfathers?

Is it the price?

No.

The alternatives to amalgam are comparably priced – or even less expensive. Amalgams cost more than glass ionomers, which can be applied via a mercury-free technique called Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART). ART does not require drilling; only hand instruments, and is virtually painless.

Amalgam also cost the same as composite fillings (also called resin) for smaller cavities, although composite can cost a few bucks more for large cavities. But when you add the horrid environmental and health catastrophe caused by amalgam, of course, amalgam’s cost to society is much higher…

The answer is: Profits!

Amalgams are quick and easy. Dentists make more money per chair per day implanting mercury. For factory-style dentistry, where the teeth represent dollar signs instead of part of a human being, dentists drill, fill, and bill. The term “drill, fill, and bill” is a joke aspiring dentists learn in dental school. Only the joke is on us and our children: they count their money, and we have a vaporous neurotoxin implanted an inch from our brains or our children’s brains.

And of course, since amalgam damages tooth structure and cracks teeth, pro-mercury dentists will continue to profit from amalgam long after its initial placement. Teeth with amalgam require more dental work in the long term. So for the pro-mercury half of dentists, amalgam is the gift that keeps on giving.

How Can Pro-Mercury Dentists Compete with Toxic-Free Dentists?

The pro-mercury dentists’ trade group, the American Dental Association, has pulled every lever with Congress, the Food and Drug Administration, the state dental boards and the corporate media to cover up amalgam’s mercury.

  1. First, the ADA popularized the deceptive term “silver fillings,” so consumers would think amalgam is made mainly of silver (actually, it has twice as much mercury as silver).
  2. Second, it mounted a no-holds-barred campaign to silence competitors and critics of 19th century dentistry, especially the courageous dentists who realized their leadership was so fundamentally in error.

According to its own self-description, the American Dental Association appears focused more on promoting products – and getting paid handsomely to do so – than in promoting its dentist members. At the bottom of its news releases, the ADA has frequently written:

“The not-for-profit ADA is the nation’s largest dental association, representing more than 155,000 dentist members. The premier source of oral health information, the ADA has advocated for the public’s health and promoted the art and science of dentistry since 1859. The ADA’s state-of-the-art research facilities develop and test dental products and materials that have advanced the practice of dentistry and made the patient experience more positive. The ADA Seal of Acceptance long has been a valuable and respected guide to consumer and professional products. For more information about the ADA, visit the Association’s Web site at www.ada.org.”

Of the five sentences, one is about members, and three about the ADA’s product endorsement system. The “ADA Seal of Acceptance” is a pay-to-play system in which companies pay the ADA to secure their endorsement. By contrast, the American Medical Association will not do pay-to-play endorsements of products; it is considered unethical.

The ADA owns two patents on amalgam, patent numbers 4,018,600 and 4,078,921. They have expired, but while they were in effect the ADA went to incredible lengths to wipe out mercury-free dentistry and quash dissent from the emerging critics of mercury-based dentistry.

The Role of the American Dental Association

How does the ADA keep pro-mercury dentists in business – and keep profits rolling in for the amalgam makers?

Here’s how:

  1. The “silver fillings” deception

Gold fillings are called gold because they are made of gold.  Seizing on the comparison, the ADA brochures promoting mercury fillings called them “silver fillings.”   The ADA claims the term means “silver-colored,” but who are they fooling? In my dictionary, the first definition of “silver” is the element.  The color is the fourth definition, behind the element, medium of exchange, coins, and eating utensils.

Consumers for Dental Choice, with its Campaign for Mercury-Free Dentistry, fought back against the “silver fillings” deception.  In California these advocates launched the term “say the M word,” which led to fact sheets on amalgam in that state and several other states and cities.  These fact sheets, which dentists are required to hand their patients, inform the public that amalgam is mercury.

  2. The gag rule

When its amalgam patents were in effect, the ADA used its power to block the emergence of mercury-free dentistry by adopting a rule of conduct prohibiting dentists from discussing mercury with their patients:

“Based on available scientific data, the ADA has determined that the removal of amalgam restorations from the non-allergic patient for the alleged purpose of removing toxic substances from the body, when such treatment is performed solely at the recommendation or suggestion of the dentist, is improper and unethical.”

Yes, the ADA said it is unethical for a dentist to tell the truth to his patients!

Thanks to an extraordinary campaign by Consumers for Dental Choice, the gag rule is now just about defunct.  Working with state lawmakers, with civil liberties organizations, with state Attorneys General (Charlie Brown, head of the consumer group, used to be one), and with an outraged citizenry, the movement for Mercury-Free Dentistry succeeded in the legislatures, in the courts, and in the courts of public opinions to restore free speech rights to dentists.

  3. Rent-a-Congressman

How about the political process?  We do have friends in Congress, Republicans like Congressman Dan Burton and Senator Mike Enzi, and Democrats like Congressman Dennis Kucinich and Congressman Gregory Meeks.  But they are few and far between.

The ADA has been particularly devious in the halls of Congress.  It doesn’t instruct its minions in Congress – members from both political parties – to write bills, conduct hearings, nor even make speeches.  Instead, the ADA buys silence and inaction from Members of Congress.  Sound familiar? It was the same tactic used by Big Tobacco for several decades.

At the state level, it’s the same; in some state capitals, the ADA has had the single largest political action committee.  The tactic is the same: Do nothing, say nothing, and cash the PAC money.

  4. Strong-arming the children of America

In the Maine legislature, money is not king.  The state has fair practices that limit outside money and create a level-playing field for unfunded candidates.  Unable to buy their way into power, the ADA resorted to outright strong-arming. A bill was gaining momentum in the Maine Legislature to phase out amalgam.  The ADA struck back, threatening to deny treatment for Maine children if their dentists could not use their favorite filling material.  If amalgam were banned, the ADA threatened:

“The result will be treatment delayed, treatment denied, and treatment never being sought. That is not a situation the dentists of Maine, the United States, or our policymakers can be willing to accept.”

Several years later, the ADA’s Pennsylvania chapter pulled the same power play against children with disabilities. A fact sheet law in the City of Philadelphia meant parents are now made aware of amalgam’s horrid health risks to their children.  In inner-city clinics, parents were insisting on mercury-free dentistry – the same as parents do in the affluent areas.  But to the Pennsylvania Dental Association, inner-city parents were supposed to take the crumbs their dentists offered: mercury fillings or no fillings.

A dental association leader was demanding that parents of children with disabilities sign a release allowing him to put mercury fillings in their children; when they refused, he denied all treatment. No tooth cleanings. Nothing…  Suburban parents might go to a dentist down the street, but for inner-city minority parents of children with disabilities, finding a dentist is not easy – and this dentist knew it. Incredibly, the Pennsylvania Dental Association – which claims to support choice for children in the suburbs – endorsed the position of this dentist.

Fortunately, the story did not end there.  This callous power play endorsed by the Pennsylvania Dental Association – denying dental care for children with disabilities unless they agreed to mercury fillings – caught the attention of the disability rights community.  The Pennsylvania Governor’s Advisory Commission on Disabilities enacted a resolution condemning this ADA chapter.

Mercury Free Dentistry Week

What Can You Do to Stop the Use of Amalgam?

During this Mercury-Free Dentistry Awareness Week, I urge you to help spread the word and help educate others by sharing this article with your social networks. Together, we can END the use of toxic mercury in dentistry.

Charlie Brown, who runs Consumers for Dental Choice, is headed to Nairobi in October to lead a worldwide delegation participating in the world mercury treaty negotiations.  With him will be a team of dentists, consumers, attorneys, and scientists fighting to get amalgam into that treaty.  With the world deciding whether we continue allowing mercury in children’s mouths, much is at stake.  Here’s what you can do in your nation or state:

Americans:  Our #1 problem is the Food and Drug Administration, which has partnered with the American Dental Association to cover up the mercury, to make you think you are getting silver instead of mercury in your mouth.  The FDA intentionally conceals the warnings about amalgam deep in its regulation — so parents will never see them.  On its website, the FDA gives dentists the green light to continue to deceive consumers with the term “silver fillings”

“Americans are ready for the end of amalgam.”  This was the theme of the testimony to the U.S. Department of State on August 18 by former West Virginia state Senator Charlotte Pritt.   Yes, Americans are ready.  But FDA is not.  So let’s send them a message.

Nine months ago, FDA scientists advised the agency to disclose the mercury to all patients and parents, and to stop amalgam for children and pregnant women.  Yet FDA sits – sits actually in the pocket of the American Dental Association – ignoring its own scientists.

Please write the Director of FDA’s Center for Devices, Jeff Shuren, jeff.shuren@fda.hhs.gov  Ask Dr Shuren why FDA continues to ignore the scientists and covers up the mercury from American parents and consumers.  Ask when FDA is going to get in step with the world on mercury.

By Dr. Mercola

This eye-opening video from the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT.org) is worth more than a thousand words when it comes to illustrating the very real danger of mercury fillings. It contains a powerful visual demonstration of how mercury vapors are released into your oral cavity every time you chew, visit the dentist, or drink hot tea or coffee, for example.

And these mercury vapors continue to be released for at least 1.5 hours after each stimulation.

The poisonous vapors are odorless, colorless and tasteless, so you can’t tell when it’s happening. But you can be sure that if you have so-called “silver fillings” in your mouth, you’re continuously exposed to mercury, which passes readily through cell membranes, across the blood-brain barrier, and into your central nervous system, where it can cause psychological, neurological, and immunological problems.

Amalgams = The Number One Source of Mercury Exposure

Dental amalgams are the primary source of mercury exposure in Americans. A single dental amalgam filling releases as much as 15 micrograms of mercury per day. The average individual has eight amalgam fillings and could absorb up to 120 micrograms of mercury per day. For comparison, eating mercury-tainted seafood will expose you to about 2.3 micrograms per day — and that is enough for scientists to call for a worldwide warning!

Unfortunately, while many have become well aware of the dangers of environmental mercury contamination, few are as well-informed when it comes to the dangers posed by dental amalgams.

Sadly, only one in four people is aware that silver amalgams contain mercury, and the dental industry is capitalizing on that ignorance. Part of the problem is that the very name “silver fillings” seems to imply they are made of silver, a misdirection that has kept a good majority of consumers in the dark for a long time. Alas, amalgams consist of more than 50 percent mercury. When confronted about this, the industry response is that the term “silver” is meant to denote the color, not the constitution…

However, dentists have also been actively persuaded to keep this information under tight wraps, and they are under no obligation whatsoever to inform their patients about the mercury content of amalgam fillings. As recently as 2009, the FDA ruled that no warning shall be issued to patients—not even to young women and parents of young children—that the mercury from the amalgam fillings is a reproductive toxin and a neurotoxin, despite the fact that pregnant women and young children are at greatest risk from mercury toxicity.

An Antiquated and Hazardous Dental Tool

In the words of Charlie Brown, president of the World Alliance for Mercury-Free Dentistry,

“Amalgam is a primitive, polluting, 19th century product that began when physicians were sawing off legs. Medicine has since moved forward.”

Unfortunately, this aspect of dentistry has not. The American Dental Association (ADA) continues to give amalgam (mercury) fillings their seal of approval, stating:

“Used by dentists for more than a century, dental amalgam is the most thoroughly researched and tested restorative material among all those in use. It is durable, easy to use, highly resistant to wear and relatively inexpensive in comparison to other materials. For those reasons, it remains a valued treatment option for dentists and their patients.”

The height of irony is that dental amalgam is shipped as a hazardous material to the dental office, and any amalgam leftover is also treated as hazardous and requires special precautions to dispose of. Yet, most dentists will readily implant this hazardous material directly into your mouth, with assurances that it’s perfectly safe and harmless!

The Health Hazards of Mercury Fillings

Mercury is a potent neurotoxin that can damage your brain, central nervous system and kidneys, and mixing it with other alloys and placing it in your mouth does NOT all of a sudden render it harmless… Children and fetuses whose brains are still developing are at greatest risk, but anyone can be affected. Naturally, the more amalgams you have, the greater your risk of experiencing health problems as a result.

In the featured video, they show that:

  • When amalgam was placed in sheep, substantial quantities of mercury spread from the filling and accumulated in the animal’s jaw, liver, kidney and stomach after just 30 days.
  • The sheep’s kidneys also dropped the ability to clear inulin by 60 percent—an indication of kidney malfunction.
  • Antibiotic-resistant dystrophic bacteria was discovered in the primates’ intestinal flora, within just two weeks of receiving mercury fillings.
  • Mercury fillings damage the ADP-ribosilation of brain neuronal proteins.
  • When amalgam fillings were placed in pregnant sheep, mercury was immediately transferred to the placenta and every part of the fetus. After birth, the offspring’s mercury levels continued to rise as a result of ingesting the mother’s milk.

Mercury is especially damaging to your central nervous system (CNS), and studies show that mercury in the CNS causes psychological, neurological, and immunological problems including:

Arrhythmias and cardiomyopathies Personality changes and irritability Blurred vision
Tremors Headaches Slowed mental response
Insomnia Weakness Unsteady gait

To make matters worse, mercury bonds very firmly to structures in your central nervous system. Unless actively removed, mercury has an extremely long half-life of somewhere between 15 and 30 years!

BEWARE! Amalgams Must Be Removed PROPERLY

It should be clear that there’s simply no such thing as a safe mercury filling. However, please do NOT make the mistake of having your amalgam fillings removed by a dentist who is not properly trained in safe amalgam removal. Doing so could expose you to tremendous health risks, due to the large amounts of mercury vapor being released during the removal process.

Research has shown that if you do not take proper safety precautions during the removal process, mercury levels in your blood can rise three to four-fold, which may result in acute toxicity.

SO PLEASE …

Make sure to use a so-called biological dentist that is trained in properly removing mercury fillings. Some things that need to be done to keep you (and your dentist) safe during the procedure include:

  • Providing you with an alternative air source and instructing you not to breathe through your mouth
  • Using a cold-water spray to minimize mercury vapors
  • Putting a rubber dam in your mouth so you don’t swallow or inhale any toxins
  • Using a high-volume evacuator near the tooth at all times to evacuate the mercury vapor
  • Washing your mouth out immediately after the fillings have been removed (the dentist should also change gloves after the removal)
  • Immediately cleaning your protective wear and face once the fillings are removed
  • Using room air purifiers

For a complete description of how to safely remove mercury amalgam, see this PDF created by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT). The proper procedure is also explained in the featured video.

Here are several sources to help you locate a dentist trained in biological dentistry:

Avoid making the same mistake I did 20 years ago when I had all my amalgams removed by a competent dentist who was an elder at the church I attended. Unfortunately, he was clueless about mercury toxicity and used no precautions and as result I got kidney damage. Additionally, I had to remove all the crowns he put in because they were metal. It was a very expensive and health damaging mistake.

I also suggest you get healthy BEFORE having your fillings removed, as you want your detoxification mechanisms optimized prior to removal. To remove mercury that has already accumulated in your body, I highly recommend reviewing my Mercury Detoxification Protocol, which details the things you can do right now to help rid your body of this toxin. If your mercury levels are seriously elevated, you should work with a knowledgeable health care practitioner to help you through the detoxification process.

Mercury Free Dentistry Week

Join the Fight to End the Use of Mercury in Dentistry!

During this Mercury-Free Dentistry Awareness Week, I urge you to help spread the word and help educate others by sharing this article with your social networks. Together, we can END the use of toxic mercury in dentistry.

To their credit, half of the dentists in the US, the UK, Australia, and Canada no longer place mercury fillings; they always use mercury-free alternatives; they never use amalgam. Since they have made the transition to mercury-free dentistry, so could the other half. And Consumers for Dental Choice is here to make sure that they do.

Rick Simpson: Fighting The Damage Caused By Radiation

Posted on 30 April 2011 by admin

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE: Fighting The Damage Caused By Radiation

After the horrible earthquake in Japan, that has caused all this damage to many of the nuclear reactors that are operating in that country, radiation is now spreading worldwide. With high levels of radiation being released into the atmosphere on a continuous basis, it will have a devastating effect on the lives of most living creatures. But once again if used properly high quality hemp oil can provide a solution that will be of great help to mankind in alleviating this situation. For years I have been telling the public, that every man woman and child on this earth, should be taking small doses of this oil everyday to maintain good health. With all the radiation that is now entering our atmosphere, it is basically urgent, that we now all start ingesting this oil as soon as possible to undo the damage this radiation will cause. Through my experience with the use of this oil, I have found that there is nothing more effective or more harmless that can reduce the damage caused by radiation. I have seen patients that were suffering from cancer who were badly damaged by the effects of radiation treatments, that were able to completely eliminate the damage in a short time. Some who have come to me that had radiation treatments, were burned so badly by its effects that their shin looked like red leather. After ingesting the oil treatment their skin went back to its normal healthy state and the radiation burns disappeared completely. If the oil can do this for someone that was badly damaged by such so called medical treatments, would its use not be effective to combat the effects of the radiation, now emanating from Japan.

There are thousands of reasons why the medicinal use of the cannabis plant, should never have been restricted in the first place. But now with the menace that all this escaping radiation presents, we would have to be insane to turn our backs on the use of hemp extracts to help us all deal with this situation. I truly feel sorry for the misery the people of Japan are now going through and if nothing can be done to stop the radiation from escaping, they may loose their homeland entirely. Don’t be fooled by government double talk, radiation is an invisible but dangerous threat to the well being of us all and only a complete fool would try to say otherwise. The wondrous medicinal effects of properly produced oil from the cannabis hemp plant are finally being recognized once more worldwide. This is just one more reason, we must begin to start growing this plant on a grand scale and it is time that we all told our governments that we have had enough of their nonsense. Our very lives and the lives of coming generations, plus the well being of many other species are at stake and its now up to us, to determine what future mankind is to have.

Best Wishes,

Rick Simpson

Mercury-Containing Medicines: Harmful to Children

Posted on 28 March 2011 by admin

Several recent studies have linked mercury to serious harm in children.

Dr. Joachim Mutter, author of one of the newest mercury studies, found evidence confirming that mercury in vaccines and other medical products could trigger autism. Another recent study observed that organic mercury is added to vaccines without sufficient safety testing, and warned that the use of mercury-containing Thimerosal is “potentially damaging the health of children.”

According to PR Newswire:

[The] rationale for the removal of mercury from medicine and dentistry is clear. … [T]he medical community needs to adapt to what we now know is best for our children’s health.”

One study (Mutter) noted:

“Prenatal exposure to maternal amalgam, maternal Thimerosal and postnatal sources (mercury from vaccines for the child) together with genetic susceptibility may trigger autism.”

Swine flu vaccines contain Polysorbate 80, an agent linked with infertility in mice, which may extend to infertility in humans. There are 3,587 reports from women who lost their babies very shortly after getting the H1N1 swine flu vaccine, causing many to question the safety of this vaccine.

Dr. Mercola’s Comments:

This “news” isn’t new—anyone who has taken a careful look at the scientific literature and epidemiological reports already knows mercury is harmful to pregnant women and children. But the more studies we have, the better—so I say, keep them coming! Who knows what critical mass is needed to eventually create a loud enough cry for change?Dr. Mercola’s Comments:

Every new piece of scientific evidence raises the chances that the U.S. government will finally have to enact legislation to protect your children from the toxic agents in vaccines.

In addition to its presence in vaccines and dental amalgams, mercury is also found in other pharmaceutical drugs, fish and seafoodhigh-fructose corn syrup, and many processed foods, including certain brands of jelly, ketchup, Coca Cola, and even Pop Tarts!

These latest studies are clearly a warning for us to clean up our toxic world.

Mercury in Dentistry Needs to Be Abolished NOW

Mercury and thimerosal need to be completely removed from the medical and dental industry. We are making progress, but not quickly enough. There needs to be zero tolerance for this potent neurotoxin as there is no safe level of exposure to mercury.

A massive grassroots campaign against the use of mercury in dental fillings, led by consumer protection attorney and activist Charlie Brown, has resulted in the FDA’s agreement to re-examine its pro-mercury fillings position.

Dental amalgams are the largest source of the mercury found in the human body, contributing about 2 to 3 times as much mercury as all dietary and environmental sources combined. Your children don’t need mercury in their food, their mouths, OR their vaccines.

Vaccines’ Unsavory Assortment of Toxins

Thimerosal is a highly toxic and poisonous ethyl mercury agent that is used as a preservative in ALL injected flu vaccines. (Inhaled flu vaccines do not contain thimerosal.)

The mercury in thimerosal is 50 times more toxic than regular mercury. Thimerosal accumulates in the tissues and organs of your body, including your brain, which is why it is neurotoxic and parents and doctors maintain that it is a major factor in childhood autism.

In the U.S., most childhood vaccines are now thimerosal-free. But some vaccines still contain mercury, including:

All DTwP products (Diphtheria, Tetanus & whole cell Pertussis) Meningococcal multi-dose vials
DT (Diphtheria & Tetanus) multi-dose vials All multi-dose vials of seasonal- and swine flu vaccine, typically recommended for adults and children over the age of three.
All Tetanus Toxoid vaccines

You can find a complete list of mercury content in U.S.-licensed vaccines here. You can also calculate the amount of mercury in shots your doctor recommends with the Vaccine Ingredient Calculator.

But thimerosal isn’t the only dangerous ingredient in vaccines. They can also contain the following:

Formaldehyde, a known cancer-causing agent Phenol (carbolic acid)
Neomycin and streptomycin (antibiotics) Resin and gelatin, known to cause allergic reactions
Polysorbate 80 (Tween80™), which can cause anaphylactic reactions, and may cause miscarriage and infertility (see the next section for details) Triton X100 (detergent)

Some include highly toxic aluminum-derivatives that may be even WORSE than mercury, and a number of other adjuvants have been shown to be highly problematic. Unfortunately, there are so many vaccines, and so many ingredients, and a variety of brands with their own patented and therefore largely secret formulations—it makes for very tricky terrain.

You also have differences between the vaccines released in Europe, versus those released in the U.S.

I believe it’s clear that these studies, taken as a whole, are like smoke signals, indicating there are significant health dangers linked to excessive vaccinations, even though science still may have a ways to go to pin down the exact mechanisms for each and every physiological reaction.

Infertility and Miscarriages from H1N1 Vaccine

The vaccine-safety community fought long and hard to get thimerosal removed from childhood vaccines, and now, just a few short years later, we’re looking at government recommendations that include multiple injections of mercury-containing flu vaccines, year-in and year-out from six months of age throughout childhood and until the las year of life.

Studies have shown that the H1N1 flu, also known as swine flu, is no more serious than most strains of seasonal flu. In fact, it’s usually milder.

Yet, millions of doses of H1N1 vaccine were given to panic-stricken adults and children. The swine flu “pandemic panic” may go down in history as one of the most massive cover-ups in American history.

The H1N1 vaccine has been connected with numerous health problems, including:

  • Guillain-Barre syndrome (CBS)
  • Thrombocytopenia (inadequate platelets in your blood)
  • Bell’s palsy (a neuroimmune reaction involving facial paralysis)

And it appears it may also be linked to a high rate of miscarriage and infertility that may be in part due to an ingredient called polysorbate 80. Both H1N1 vaccines, Fluarix and Novartis’ Agriflu, contain this agent.

Polysorbate 80, also known as Tween 80, is a detergent (surfactant) used to deliver certain drugs or chemical agents across the blood-brain barrier.

You can also find this ingredient in any vaccine using the adjuvant MF59, which contains both polysorbate 80 and squalene, which is yet another hazardous ingredient. Squalene is an adjuvant used in vaccines marketed in Europe and other countries, but squalene has not yet been approved by the FDA as an ingredient for vaccines distributed in the U.S.

A Slovakian study, done in 1993, was a very damning study against polysorbate 80.

Researchers injected female rats with Tween 80 on days four through seven after birth. They discovered that Tween 80 accelerated the rats’ maturation, prolonged the estrous cycle, decreased the weight of the uterus and ovaries, and caused damage to the lining of the uterus indicative of chronic estrogenic stimulation.

The rats’ ovaries were also damaged, with degenerative follicles and no corpora lutea (a mass of progesterone-secreting endocrine tissue that forms immediately after ovulation).

Such severe ovarian damage can lead to infertility.

Polysorbate 80 has also been found to cause severe anaphylactic shock (see this 2005 study) and may exert cancer-promoting effects on cellular metabolism (1965 study).

Injecting Foreign Proteins into Your Body is Bound to Create Problems

Dr. Shiv Chopra presented the following additional perspective and concerns regarding the actual injection of the vaccine.

ALL vaccines, by their very definition, are antigens. Antigens are substances that, when introduced into your body, trigger the production of an antibody by your immune system. In other words, your body views antigens as harmful invaders and sends out the troops to fight them.

Every antigen, by definition, must be a protein your body views as foreign.

In nature, foreign proteins are NEVER allowed to directly enter your blood stream, whole and intact. They are always first broken down by your digestive tract into their constituent amino acids, which are familiar to your body.

Any tampering with these biological laws, such as injecting foreign proteins through a needle, holds great potential for causing autoimmune diseases, like autism, because it interferes with your natural immunological function.

This is precisely what may be happening with our massive injection of vaccines into children, while their fragile immune systems are still developing.

And there is evidence that just ONE dose of thimerosal-laced vaccine can cause neurological harm!

A 2009 study showed that monkeys receiving just one dose of hepatitis B vaccine (which contains thimerosal) suffered significant developmental delays, even though the vaccine was adjusted for body weight to simulate the amount given to human infants. Although, it wasn’t clear if the damage resulted from the thimerosal, or from the vaccine itself.

Either way, it was bad news for the monkeys and has dire implications for human children. The vaccinated primates took more than twice as long as unexposed controls to acquire three standardized skills typically used to measure infant brain development.

The bottom line is, the drug industry knows vaccines are good for business. But they can’t prove they’re good for your health. Educating yourself is no longer an option. It’s essential if you want to stay healthy.

Top 10 Reasons to Support Mercury-Free Dentistry

Posted on 13 January 2011 by admin

Top 10 Reasons to Support
Mercury-Free Dentistry

Amalgam pollutes our environment
Amalgam pollutes 1) water via dental clinic releases and human waste; 2) air via cremation, dental clinic emissions, sludge incineration, and respiration; and 3) land via landfills, burials, and fertilizer. Once in the environment, dental mercury converts to its even more toxic form: methylmercury and becomes a major source of mercury in the fish people eat. Dental mercury in the environment can cause brain damage and neurological problems, especially for children and the unborn babies, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
Amalgam endangers our health
Amalgam emits mercury vapor even after it is implanted into the body. This mercury is bioaccumulative, and it crosses the placenta to accumulate in fetuses as well. Dental amalgam’s mercury is a known health risk, especially for children, fetuses, nursing infants, and people with impaired kidney function especially. Even the U.S. Food and Drug Administration concedes that the developing neurological systems of children and fetuses are more susceptible to “the neurotoxic effects of mercury vapor” – and that there is no evidence that amalgam is safe for these populations.
Amalgam damages teeth
Placing amalgam requires the removal of a significant amount of healthy tooth matter. This removal, in turn, weakens overall tooth structure which increases the need for future dental work. On top of that, amalgam fillings – which expand and contract over time – crack teeth and once again create the need for still more dental work.
Amalgam endangers dental workers
Due to mercury exposure from amalgam in the workplace, studies have shown that dental workers have elevated systemic mercury levels. Few of these dental workers – mostly women of child-bearing age – are given protective garb or air masks to minimize their exposure to mercury; many are not aware of the risks of occupational mercury exposure. As a result, dental workers have reported neurological problems, reproductive failures, and birth defects caused by amalgam in the workplace.
Amalgam is frequently implanted without informed consent
Most dentists do not inform consumers that amalgam contains mercury. As a result, over 76% of consumers do not know that amalgam is mainly mercury according to Zogby polls. But once they are informed, 77% of people do not want mercury fillings – and they were even willing to pay more to avoid this unnecessary source of mercury exposure.
Amalgam perpetuates social injustice
While middle class consumers opt for mercury-free filling materials, people in developing nations, low-income families, minorities, military personnel, prisoners, and people with disabilities are still subjected to amalgam. Racial minorities are more likely to receive amalgam; for example, dentists place almost 25% more mercury fillings in American Indian patients than in white patients. In his testimony before Congress, former Virginia state NAACP president Emmitt Carlton described this injustice as “choice for the rich, mercury for the poor.”
Amalgam costs taxpayers
Taxpayers foot the bill for the environmental clean-up of amalgam and the medical care associated with mercury-related health problems. Meanwhile, the dentists who dump their mercury into our environment and our bodies are not held financially responsible.
Amalgam is diverted to illegal gold mining
Amalgam is commonly shipped to developing countries labeled for dental use, but then it is diverted to illegal use in artisanal and small-scale gold mining. Not only are the miners exposed to the risks of mercury poisoning, but the dental mercury they use to extract gold is released into the environment.
Amalgam is interchangeable with mercury-free filling materials
Amalgam is interchangeable with numerous other filling materials – including resin composites, compomers, and glass ionomers – that have rendered amalgam completely unnecessary for any clinical situation. In fact, the mercury-free alternatives have made amalgam so non-essential that entire nations, such as the Scandinavian countries, have banned the use of amalgam. Developing nations have benefitted from modern mercury-free techniques, such as atraumatic restorative treatment (ART), that only cost half as much as amalgam and make dental care more accessible.
Amalgam drives up the price of mercury-free alternatives
The continued use of amalgam keeps the price of mercury-free filling materials high by decreasing demand for these alternatives. As use of mercury-free materials increases, their price is expected to decrease even further.
